ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (April 6, 2021) – Students in Albuquerque who are interested in enrolling in a practical nursing program should look no further than Pima Medical Institute. The campus, which has been serving the greater Albuquerque community since 1985, has earned full state Board of Nursing and national nursing accreditation for its practical nursing program. It is the only school in the state with CNEA accreditation.

In addition, the program received a six-year accreditation – the longest given by the National League for Nursing Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation. Once students graduate from the practical nursing program, they are eligible to take the NCLEX-PN® Exam.

The licensed practical nurse (LPN) works under the direction of registered nurses and doctors. The LPN is a valuable part of the healthcare team and is responsible for providing direct care to patients, monitoring patients’ blood pressure, changing bandages and inserting catheters, reporting the health status of patients to nurses and doctors and managing medical records.

The LPN career is completely patient-focused, so it is important that those interested in the field possess compassion and empathy and have good interpersonal skills like patience, physical stamina and effective communication skills.

The Albuquerque Practical Nursing program is currently led by Cynthia D. Clark, MSN, MA, PHN, ACHE, CLNC, RN. Clark is a Registered Nurse and Certified Legal Nursing Consultant with more than 30 years of experience in multiple areas of nursing and healthcare, organizational development, teaching/staff development, administration and leadership.

“We have great leadership within this program,” said Yuriana Lancaster, campus director, Pima Medical Institute, Albuquerque. “This accreditation further illustrates the level of education our students receive. We are proud of our entire team of faculty and staff that made this possible.”

The Practical Nursing Program at Pima Medical prepares graduates to be ready to begin their careers by providing quality, hands-on education in real-world lab classrooms. Being prepared to hit the ground running is essential in a community like Albuquerque, which is known as
the medical hub of New Mexico. The city is home to numerous state-of-the-art medical centers and top hospitals including Presbyterian Hospital, Presbyterian Medical Services, Heart Hospital of New Mexico, Lovelace Women’s Hospital and the VA Medical Center.

It is a career that will continue to grow, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Recent reports show employment of licensed practical nurses is projected to grow nine percent by 2029, much faster than the average for all occupations. As the baby-boom population ages, the overall need for healthcare services is expected to increase. LPNs will continue to be needed in residential care facilities and in-home health environments to care for older patients.*
