This week Aviation Institute of Maintenance (AIM) will open its gym to host collegiate athletes from schools such as Norfolk State, Florida A&M, Coppin State, Howard, and others as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Basketball Tournament comes to downtown Norfolk. The games will be played at Scope Arena, and AIM’s gym will be utilized as practice space.
Says AIM Executive Vice President, Dr. Joel English, “Since Aviation Institute of Maintenance found its new home in Norfolk a year ago, we’ve opened our doors to community events, church services, COVID vaccination drives, and athletics. Just last week, AIM hosted Walmart’s vaccine clinic, which was open to the public and succeeded in vaccinating 2,400 citizens of Norfolk. The community has welcomed us, and we are honored to give back. We’re thrilled to welcome the student athletes of the MEAC tournament into our facility, and we hope for a healthy and joyous 2021 tournament.”
Located at 2329 E. Little Creek Road, AIM resides in the former Calvary Christian School complex, an 11-acre, 109,000 sq. ft. facility with a 13,000 sq. ft. gymnasium among its many amenities. The campus is less than 2 miles from Norfolk International Airport, and it boasts ample stores and restaurants nearby. The campus will serve as a perfect practice spot for a basketball tournament. “We (the MEAC and the City of Norfolk) are thankful to the Aviation Institute of Maintenance for making their facility available for MEAC basketball teams to practice. We had unforeseen cancellations for our normal practice arenas. The Aviation Institute of Maintenance stepped up in a big way for the City and MEAC,” says John Rhamstine, the Director of Cultural Facilities, Arts, and Entertainment for Seven Venues.
