Keiser University nursing students help local health care workers at vaccination sites

Nursing students from Keiser University Port St. Lucie are on the front lines of the COVID-19 recovery effort administering lifesaving vaccinations in St. Lucie and Martin counties.

Last month, officials with the Florida Department of Health in St. Lucie and Martin counties reached out to Keiser’s Port St. Lucie campus for assistance at their local COVID-19 vaccination sites.

Chancellor and CEO Arthur Keiser said it’s very exciting to see the students volunteer.

“It’s very exciting to see that they are qualified to do this and we’re just grateful to them to what they’re doing to give back to the community,” he said. “We look to see more of our students throughout the state participate in the vaccine program.”

Nursing students are getting the chance to spend some of their class time in the field and get real-life on-the-job training.

“We have our students in the same lab working hands-on we are in a trying time right now nurses are in high demand we need nurses on the front line,” said Maureen Harry, director of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. “We have to make sure our students are ready to play the role, take the role of our front-line workers as we go out there in this pandemic.”
