Experts Predict Second Wave For Coronavirus: Will College Campuses Really Reopen In The Fall? – Forbes

During a recent webinar for the Economic Club of Washington, Dr. Anthony Fauci said, “I’m almost certain [the coronavirus] will come back, because the virus is so transmissible.” While remarks like this might threaten his job security, the nation’s top doc doesn’t deny science. He shares it. A second-round of Covid-19 cases is expected in the fall – just as college campuses plan to reopen. Are universities really prepared to ride out the next wave? Many college leaders fear that students simply won’t return, especially international enrollment. What’s the impact if students – and sports – don’t return to campus in just a few months?

Watching the Waves

Singapore was regarded as one of Asia’s top spots for coronavirus prevention. In mid-March, the island nation reported fewer than 300 cases. In just 30 days, NPR reports that number has skyrocketed to over 17,000. The reason for the reversal of fortune? Overcrowded dormitories. These dormitories house approximately 1/3 of Singapore’s foreign workforce, in often unsanitary and densely-packed conditions. While college dormitories on US campuses are nowhere near the tough standards experienced by Singapore’s migratory workers, campus leaders should consider the impact of close quarters during a potential resurgence.
