Dental Assistant Students at Pima Medical Institute’s Houston Campus Prove they are True Stars of the South with First Place Win in Scientific Table Clinic Competition

Dental Assistant Students from the Pima Medical Institute Houston campus recently participated in a competition held during the annual Greater Houston Dental Society (GHDS) Star of the South Convention. For the last 49 years, the GHDS has hosted the Star of the South Convention. Regarded as the “International Annual Conference and Exhibition for the Dental Industry,” Star of the South features leading professionals from the dental industry and attracts thousands of visitors and more than five hundred exhibitors.

A large portion of the conference is the Scientific Table clinic. During the competition dentists, residents, hygienists, dental assistants and dental assistant students compete to share their knowledge of current research and new techniques through informative demonstrations. Each entity develops compelling topics and research. Fellow dental professionals and the GHDS board judge each entry. Individual presenters must prove their research through rigorous interviews.

Pima Medical Institute’s Houston campus walked away with First Place! This is the third year in a row the Dental Assistant Program has won the intense competition.

“I’m so proud of my students and our college,” said Brittany Miller, RDA, CDA and Lead Dental Assistant Instructor. “This competition illustrates the caliber of our students and instructors here at Pima Medical. Quality outcomes in and out of the classroom are something we pride ourselves on.”

The topic that brought home the win this year was “The Pros and Cons to Utilizing the Nomad Pro and the Safety of the Occupational worker,” presented by Julia Lopez, Destiny Griffin, Stephanie Pardo, Jesse Vanegas, Diamond Douglas and Lauren Gates.

Miller added, “Our students competed against many great schools and universities and worked as a team to bring home the win thanks to their energy and educated research.”

While some Dental Assistant students will go on to pursue additional schooling and pursue a career as a dental hygienist that is not always the end goal. Those completing the Dental Assistant program and beginning their careers have a positive career outlook. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of dental assistants is projected to grow 11 percent over the next several years, much faster than the average for all occupations.
