Congressional Democrats are moving ahead with an effort to thwart Education Secretary Betsy DeVos’ new policy that makes it more difficult for federal student loan borrowers to cancel their debt based on a college’s misconduct. House leaders are planning to hold a vote next week on a measure that would overturn DeVos’ rewrite of the Obama-era “borrower defense” rule.

— The Trump administration policy, which was finalized last year, sets more stringent rules for when the government will wipe out the debt of students claiming they were misled or deceived by a college. The rule is set to take effect on July 1.

— Majority Leader Steny Hoyer wrote in a Jan. 3 letter to colleagues that the House plans to take up the measure next week. A spokesperson confirmed on Wednesday that’s still the plan. The House Rules Committee will first take up the measure before it heads to the floor.
