A trustee of Hiwassee College, which closed its doors last year due to financial issues, is asking the school to return his $100,000 donation.

William Harmon, a Maryville doctor, is suing the school and asking they return the donation he made in April 2018. The $100,000 gift was to go toward building a new library area on campus, named in his honor, according to the lawsuit filed in Monroe County Chancery Court.

Harmon was the college’s board of trustees secretary, according to the school’s website.

Hiwassee College, located in Madisonville, abruptly closed on May 10, 2019, due to financial reasons. The college, associated with the Holston Conference of the United Methodist Church, was founded in 1849.
