Federal officials were meeting with accreditors and state regulators amid predictions that as many as half of all universities could close or go bankrupt in the next decade.

THE TRUMP administration, at an all-hands-on-deck meeting Wednesday, will consider ways to stem rapid closures of colleges and universities that over the last few years have stranded thousands of students.

The event, at which Education Secretary Betsy DeVos and other high-ranking department officials will meet for a day-long conference with accreditors and state regulators, is closed to the press.

“The Department is hosting a meeting for members of the triad to have an open dialogue about how to improve communication and information sharing to better serve and protect students,” department spokeswoman Angela Morabito said in a statement emailed to U.S. News, referencing the three-pronged accountability system that involves accreditors, state regulators and the federal government.

“This meeting is the first of its kind in more than a decade, and in order to ensure that triad members engage in candid conversation, it is closed to the press,” she said. “We look forward to working more closely with our triad partners to mitigate the risks and potential harm to students associated with school closures, and to work more collaboratively to address other challenges that institutions and students might face in the coming years.”
