[Tulsa, Oklahoma, August 29th, 2019] – A Clary Sage College (CSC) barber student has taken it upon himself to serve a small church community with free haircuts once a month. Joe Baca has performed over 150 free haircuts for members of the Avant House of Prayer community in Avant, Oklahoma.
“The church in Avant is my home church and they made me feel welcome during a difficult time in my life. I noticed that this little town didn’t have a lot of resources for the youth and I felt led to help them out by giving free haircuts to the kids. I have plans to return in October and I’m currently recruiting my fellow Clary barber students to join me in serving this special community again,” said Joe Baca, a current CSC barber student.
Baca has visited the church to perform free haircuts over 6 times this year. The last time that he made a trip out to serve this community, Baca invited along his CSC instructor, Paula Matthews.
“I felt honored that Joe invited me to come and help out. The look on those kiddos faces when I was finished with the haircut was indescribable. I remembered that helping others feel great about themselves is what it’s all about,” said Matthews.
CSC had recently just finished their Cuts for Kids event where students and instructors gave over 1058 free haircuts to kids over a two-day period. The CSC barber program is focused on teaching upcoming barber professionals about precision, technique, and style. Students learn the art of the straight razor shave, beard design, and haircutting for both men and women. This includes a special focus on haircuts, chemical treatments, and shaving tools and techniques. Students learn both in the classroom and in the CSC on-campus barbershop where they work with real clients.
