Virginia College, which closed in December, has appealed the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools’ decision to withdraw accreditation, the president of the Washington, D.C.-based accrediting organization said Wednesday.

The Accrediting Council notified Virginia College Dec. 4 of its decision to withdraw by suspension accreditation but explained the for-profit college could notify the council of its desire to appeal within 10 business days. Virginia College also would have to pay $10,000 to start the appeal process, the letter of notification said. Virginia College told students the same week it was closing as of Dec. 18 and it posted a notice on its website referring students to the U.S. Department of Education’s website for information about transferring, obtaining transcripts or student aid.

In an email to the Savannah Morning News Wednesday, Michelle Edwards, president of ACICS, said the college has opted to appeal.

The ACICS’ Review Board of Appeals is the body that will hear details of the appeal. Edwards said the review board is expected to meet in February or March, prior to ACICS’ next schedule meeting during the first week of April.
