The Education Department has released new data showing how it has resolved colleges’ appeals under the Obama-era gainful employment rule. The Trump administration, for the first time, reports that it has denied some of the hundreds of appeals submitted by for-profit colleges and other career colleges.

— As of Jan. 18, the department has approved the appeals submitted by 109 career college programs and denied appeals submitted by seven programs. Another 225 appeals remain pending. See the full data here.

— The new appeals data, released on Friday, comes as the Trump administration is in the process of finalizing its proposal to completely eliminate the gainful employment rule. The regulation, which cuts off federal funding to low-performing career college programs, remains on the books. But it is already effectively dead because of a dispute over earnings data between the Social Security Administration and the Education Department.
