[Tulsa, Oklahoma, September 16, 2018] – Community Care College is celebrating their Surgical Technologist students and raising awareness for the intensity of the career field September 16th-September 22nd. Casey Bellew, Surgical Technologist Clinical Director at Community Care College, wrote to Mayor G.T.Bynum’s office and received a proclamation certificate for the recognition of National Surgical Technologists Week.

National Surgical Technology Week is such a great way to showcase our profession and bring awareness to the public about the importance of our job. It is also a great time to show our students how valued they will be once they graduate and become part of the workforce. We celebrate this week to get our students involved and to remind them to always be proud of their future profession,” commented Surgical Technologist Clinical Director, Casey Bellew.

Association of Surgical Technologists’ Definition: Certified Surgical Technologist
Surgical technologists prepare the operating room, including the sterile field, setting up surgical equipment, supplies and solutions. During surgery, surgical technologists pass instruments, fluids and supplies to the surgeon and prepare and manage surgical equipment. Surgical technologists simultaneously manage the sterile field and specimens. Surgical technologists perform a count of sponges and supplies to prevent foreign retained objects. Surgical technologists are certified following successful completion of a CAAHEP-accredited program or other programmatically-accredited surgical technology program and the national Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) examination administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting.

Surgical Technologists prepare both the patient and the operating room for surgeries. Community Care College’s experienced Surgical Technologist faculty combine classroom instruction and hands-on learning to fully prepare students to be successful in any operating room. With opportunities at area hospitals, every student is required to complete a 500-hour externship to hone their skills in a real operating room with real patients. Under the guidance of an experienced Surgical Technologist Instructor, students gain the experience they need to enter this profession with confidence. All graduates will be prepared to sit for the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) certification.
