24-Hour Fundraiser Shines Light on Community Nonprofits like The San Marcos Promise

San Diego, Calif. (September 8, 2021) – On Thursday, September 9, San Diego will host its first-ever, local giving day called San Diego Gives. The goal is to raise money for and shine a light on the work of nonprofits in the community – nonprofits including The San Marcos Promise (TSMP.) Based in San Marcos, TSMP is dedicated to guiding and supporting students on their journeys to college or university and into the workforce. To help fulfill the mission, the organization has developed partnerships with many community leaders, including Pima Medical Institute.

The area’s first-of-its kind public/private partnership has provided two, full-time Education Coordinators to the school district. Rogelio “Roy” Huerta and Amanda Yantzer, are employed officially by Pima Medical Institute, and work year-round with high school students throughout the San Marcos Unified School District, adding their support to an already busy team of school counselors.

The team helps students discover and cultivate their interests and strengths, connect to compatible career paths, develop financial literacy skills, prepare for college and career and build life skills. All students can access support at any time, via in-person or virtual appointments. That way, no student is excluded from this critical training due to access barriers.

James Loweth is a student at San Marcos High School and raved about the help he received creating a resume. He said, “Fitting your entire personality and work experience on one professional page can be a very daunting experience, but with the help of Amanda and Roy I found it super easy and now it’s ready to send to any job I might apply to.”

“We realize that talent is universal, but opportunity is not,” said Lisa Stout, Executive Director, The San Marcos Promise. “We provide programs, resources and help create opportunities for students to learn about their strengths and interests and explore the many career and educational options that exist in their futures. We couldn’t do it without the support of our community members and partners, and that’s why a day like San Diego Gives is so important to organizations like ours.”

The San Marcos Promise has positioned itself as the bridge that connects education, business, and community leaders and is raising funds to create high-tech Future Centers as a new model for youth workforce development training. Thanks to the generous donation and partnership with Pima Medical Institute, those Future Centers are staffed, year-round to assist students and families.

“We are committed to building a stronger workforce and supporting the communities we serve,” said Fred Freedman, President and CEO, Pima Medical Institute. “Ultimately, we want students to be armed with the tools to succeed post high school. The San Marcos Promise is like an amplified instrument, powering student success. The Promise plays a role like no other in North San Diego County. One day soon, we hope to see that role expanded to neighboring cities in North County.”

The San Marcos Promise is 100 percent community-funded. Support students throughout the entire San Diego area by clicking here or here. Your donation will make an immediate difference!
