Thousands of Students across All Campuses Submitted Nominations for their Favorite Teacher

Tucson, Ariz. (May 19, 2021) – Pima Medical Institute celebrated teacher appreciation week earlier this month. The college sent an email to students asking them to nominate an instructor who made a difference in their life, or went above and beyond their normal role in the classroom. The response was overwhelming. Thousands of nominations came in from students across all campuses as well as the college’s online division.

The avalanche of votes and words of praise for the hard work of the instructors, illustrates the important role the Pima Medical faculty plays day in and day out. In a year that is still contending with a worldwide healthcare pandemic, Pima Medical’s instructors played an even more important part in their students’ lives. More than just words of praise for instructors’ dedication in the classroom, many students pointed out the help and support they received in their personal lives as well.

Luis Quezada, a student at the El Paso campus notes the following about his Radiography instructor Rogelio Orta Martin. “Mr. Orta is not only extremely knowledgeable in his profession, but when I was sick with COVID-19 last year, Mr. Orta checked in on me constantly and always wanted to make sure that I was doing ok. He constantly offered his help and support, and even offered to buy my groceries, medicine that I needed. These things definitely define going above and beyond his profession.” Quezada added, “Mr. Orta is not only the truest and purest definition of what a true professional is, but who he is the definition of the words awesome and inspiring! He is an amazing leader and man. Pima Medical and the students here in El Paso TX are very lucky to have him, myself included.”

Practical Nursing student Elijah Tyler Mcconkey of the Aurora Campus had this to say about Betsy Woolf. “Mrs. Woolf’s role evolved from part-time clinical instructor to clinical instructor, classroom instructor, and our only instructor in the state. With all of the changes in the program, I feel it would have been very easy for her to walk away or to not take on the additional responsibility. Instead, she put the needs of 30 complete strangers over herself. She learned systems and put together a class on only 48 hours’ notice. Because of her actions, our cohort is moving to its fifth sequence. As I reflect on all I’ve learned in nursing school, the compassion and selflessness that Mrs. Woolf demonstrated in her actions will be some of the most memorable.”

These are just a few of the examples submitted throughout the process. Instructors who received the most votes from each campus were recognized and highlighted at pmi.edu and are:

  • Darren Warner, Radiography, Albuquerque, N.M.
