Attacking For-Profit Colleges Helps Nobody

The recent editorial, “A Poison Pill for For-Profit Colleges” exposes the truth about Democrats’ educational agenda – expand federal intervention at the expense of students and taxpayers.

The federal government should not be in the business of picking winners and losers, yet Democrats’ $1.9 trillion reconciliation bill places financial restrictions on for-profit colleges that do not apply to nonprofit and public schools.

As your article correctly pointed out, government overreach has limited educational freedom and negatively impacted veterans’ learning opportunities.

During the Education and Labor Committee’s markup of the Democrats’ budget reconciliation scheme, I offered a compromise amendment to remove federal military and veterans’ education benefits from the 90/10 rule. Committee Democrats voted against the proposal. So much for bipartisanship.

Increasing educational opportunities and supporting veterans should not be a partisan issue. Society flourishes when its members can develop in an environment that works best for their unique needs and strengths. Forcing students into a one-size-fits-all learning environment and limiting the educational opportunities of those who have sacrificed for our country is wrong.

Instead of pushing their Pelosi payoff bill, Democrats should work to reform our postsecondary education system so all students are equipped with the skills they need for lifelong success. With a growing skills gap in our country, this is more important than ever.

Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC)
Republican Leader, House Committee on Education and Labor
