Presented by the California Association of Private Postsecondary Schools (CAPPS) this Honor Highlights Pima Medical’s Commitment to San Diego County

Chula Vista, Calif. (April 20, 2020) – Pima Medical Institute’s Chula Vista Campus has been awarded the California Association of Private Postsecondary Schools (CAPPS) Excellence in Community Services Award. The Chula Vista campus was recognized for the outstanding work done by the students, faculty and staff to enrich the lives of both the two and four-legged members of San Diego County. Each community event was inspired by the ideas of both staff and students and because of the variety of personalities and backgrounds; Chula Vista has been involved in an eclectic selection of events.

“In addition to providing quality, in-demand healthcare education to our students, community involvement is a key to our success,” said Lou Osborn, Chula Vista Campus Director. “San Diego County is where the majority of our students, faculty and staff call home. To be able to provide support within our community, not only helps our students, it helps everyone, and that’s a gratifying feeling.”

flu vaccines
The campus provided free flu vaccines to staff and students in October.

Community projects included the Walk for Animals hosted by the San Diego Humane Society. Driven by the veterinary sciences program, students signed up to be either a pancake server or a cheerleader for the 5k walk. The money collected went to help make a more humane San Diego for companion animals and wildlife. In the projected year alone, San Diego Humane Society will care for more than 50,000 animals in need.

The Chula Vista campus also hosted two American Red Cross Blood Drives. With 50 donors and 36 pints of blood, more than 100 potential lives could be saved from the events. Campus volunteers even managed to recruit 38 new blood donors.

In October, the campus provided free flu vaccines to staff and students. The campus collaborated with Walgreens and each vaccine given allowed a matching donation of a free vaccine to a low-income customer. There were 154 flu vaccines given during the Flu Shot Clinic. This means 154 low to middle class San Diegans were able to receive a free flu vaccine due to the matching donation.

In November, the Chula Vista campus showed its support for our Veterans. The Veteran’s Rally was a focal point for Career Education Colleges and Universities (CECU) to provide our Veteran families the opportunity to learn more about Veterans for Career Education, how to join the organization and support a Veteran’s right to choose the education that is right for them.

Father Joe’s Kitchen
Students and staff volunteered their time at Father Joe’s Kitchen over the Thanksgiving holiday.

During the Thanksgiving holiday, campus employees and students volunteered to participate at Father Joe’s Kitchen. Twenty staff and students donated their time and energy to help serve a warm Thanksgiving feast to 500 homeless San Diegans and their companion animals.

In addition, on Valentine’s Day 2020 the campus partnered with the American Heart Association and Live Well San Diego. Fifty medical assistant students were divided into volunteer groups and were dispersed to collect data to raise awareness of hypertension and heart health. They served the Jewish Community Center of San Diego, Dan McKinney YMCA, Point Loma YMCA, and Urban Street Angels in Downtown San Diego. About 100 blood pressures were taken at each site.

“Community Service is in our DNA here at Pima Medical Institute,” said John Hanson, Regional Director of Operations. “In the midst of the headline grabbing tragedies associated with the COVID-19 crisis, we are proud to have the good we do continue to be recognized.”

The CAPPS Excellence in Community Service Awards began in 2016 to recognize CAPPS Member Schools that have demonstrated exceptional commitment to their local community. These awards recognize and encourage initiatives in community service, service learning, and civic engagement that have a significant impact on the communities served by CAPPS member schools.
