A Pittsburgh man is so irritated by repeated automated phone calls that he’s taking the caller to task in federal court.

John Shipmon has sued an online university in California, saying he’s been flooded by automated calls from the school in violation of federal law despite assurances that it would stop calling.

Mr. Shipmon, who lives in Manchester, sued Ashford University of San Diego in federal court on Friday, alleging that the school is violating the Telephone Consumer Protection Act, passed in 1991 to crack down on harassment from phone solicitors.

Over the years, many consumers across the country have filed similar suits against telemarketers and other businesses for violating the law by not honoring requests by consumers to stop calling or failing to maintain a “do-not-call” list.
