The total number of international students enrolled in U.S. higher education for the 2018/19 academic year has risen slightly to 1,095,299, according to the 2019 Open Doors Report on International Education Exchange published by IIE. That represents a 0.05% increase on 2017/18 and marks the fourth consecutive year that the number of international students has surpassed one million. Students from overseas make up 5.5% of the total U.S. student population and last year they contributed $44.7 billion to the American economy.

For the tenth year in succession, China is the largest source of international students with 369,548 enrolled in undergraduate, graduate, non-degree and optional practicing training programs. Despite the rising tensions and a trade war between Washington and Beijing, that total marks a 1.7% increase on the 2017/18 academic year. The report found that 202,014 students came from India while South Korea had the third-highest total – 52,250. Some of the strongest growth was recorded for emerging market countries, particularly Bangladesh (10%), Brazil (9.8%), Nigeria (5.8%) and Pakistan (5.6%). 51.6% of all international students in the U.S. are enrolled in STEM fields.
