SEATTLE – Pima Medical Institute Dental Hygiene student Mackenzie Miller was recently awarded the prestigious Platinum Educational Group scholarship. The scholarship was originally created for Emergency Medical Services (EMS) students, and in 2016, Platinum Group expanded its program to include the nursing and allied health fields as well.
Mackenzie’s thesis portion of her scholarship application was impressive and defined inadequacies of geriatric dental care in long-term care facilities. She said, “Long-term care facilities fall short in meeting the oral health needs of their geriatric patients, and dental hygienists need to reevaluate their dental delivery framework to help close this gap in care.” She added, “Dental hygiene as a profession has an ethical and professional responsibility to ensure that all members of our community have access to quality, affordable and accessible care.”
