Automotive students at NASCAR Technical Institute play a vital role in Myers’ win

MOORESVILLE, N.C. – When driver Burt Myers won his fourth consecutive Bowman Gray Stadium Modified Championship on Saturday, he did it with an engine built by students from Universal Technical Institute’s (UTI) Mooresville campus, NASCAR Technical Institute (NASCAR Tech). Myers’ win caps an incredible season for NASCAR Tech’s student-built engine program, where honors students have also built engines for race teams competing in the K&N Pro Series East and the DIRTcar Modified Series.

Myers has been racing with NASCAR Tech’s student-built engines for the last several years, and they’ve helped him take competition to a new level at Bowman Gray Stadium, “The Madhouse”, one of NASCAR’s most storied tracks. On Saturday, Myers drove his No. 1 car in the Carolina Farm Credit 150, the final modified series race of the season. The race was an exciting one, going into overtime with multiple lead and position changes throughout.

“What a night and what a race,” said Myers. “It took a little while to get to the front and I really wanted to win the race, but the championship was our first priority. I can’t say enough about my NASCAR Technical Institute student-built engines. The performance and durability has been there all year and it was there again on Saturday, when we needed it the most. The honors students that build these engines are fantastic and I can’t thank NASCAR Tech enough for the support.”

NASCAR Tech’s VP Business Alliances & NASCAR, John Dodson, was there to celebrate with Myers as he hoisted his newest piece of hardware.

“It was thrilling to watch Burt Myers win another championship with a NASCAR Technical Institute student-built engine under the hood,” said John Dodson, VP Business Alliances & NASCAR at Universal Technical Institute. “We’re proud to partner with Burt and other incredibly talented drivers, and I congratulate our students and instructor Darrell Hoffman on their success. This was their win as well.”
