Southeastern Institute-Charleston Hosts U.S. Senator Tim Scott to speak with veteran students
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. – Southeastern Institute-Charleston hosted United States Senator Tim Scott (R-South Carolina) on campus on August 10 to tour the school and meet with members of the Southeastern Institute veteran community. Campus President Tim Van Horn was joined by Southeastern Institute’s Executive Director Robert Keiser to welcome Senator Scott and provide him with an opportunity to speak with students and staff.
“We were honored to host Senator Tim Scott and speak with him about the educational needs of the Charleston metro area,” said Van Horn. “We were happy to show him the campus and have him meet members of our veteran community as well as our faculty and staff.”
During his visit, Senator Scott was able to see firsthand Southeastern’s commitment to providing workforce education in Charleston. He toured the school’s lab facilities and learned about the unique programs offered at Southeastern’s Charleston campus which include diplomas and associate degrees that prepare students for employment in five allied health professions.
In addition to a campus tour, Senator Scott spoke with Southeastern Institute students who have served in the United States Military and thanked them for their service. In 2017-18, nearly 20 percent of Southeastern Institute-Charleston’s student population were servicemembers or veterans. South Carolina ranks 8th in the nation in the number of active military personal residing in the state.
A member of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions, Senator Scott is in his first full term as the junior United States Senator from South Carolina. He is a native of North Charleston and has previously served as a Charleston County Commissioner and a member of the South Carolina and United States House of Representatives.
“Southeastern Institute is appreciative of Senator Scott’s visit to our Charleston campus and the senator’s leadership on the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions committee,” said Keiser. “He continues to be a champion for quality career education, veteran’s rights, educational choice, and workforce development for South Carolinians. We’re confident that under Senator Scott’s leadership the American system of higher education will continue to be a global leader in innovation and outcomes.”
