Southeastern College-Miami Lakes faculty, staff, and students display backpacks that were recently donated to the Project HOPE Back to School Backpack Drive. Members of the Southeastern College community purchased the bags and school supplies and filled them with supplies according to grade level.

Hosted annually, HOPE’s Back to School Backpack Drive helps ease the financial burden that can accompany families when students return to school. The Center works with local elementary schools to provide backpacks and school supplies to struggling families in Broward County.

This is the third consecutive year Southeastern’s Miami Lakes campus has participated in the backpack drive. Faculty, staff and students raised funds to purchase the backpacks and school supplies that would fill them. Students and staff hosted a “filling party” where they took shifts organizing the supplies by grade level and placing them in the new backpacks.

“I am so proud of our faculty, staff and students for helping HOPE Outreach with their annual backpack drive that provides school supplies to those in need in our community,” said Southeastern College President Julia Corona. “This is our third year and we have helped more than 200 children in our community gain access to the school supplies they need to have a successful school year!”

The 48 bags donated by Southeastern College this year accounted for nearly one-quarter of all bags donated in the 2019 campaign. HOPE Outreach Center distributed the backpacks to local elementary school children in Broward County on August 9, 2019.

“Southeastern College has ensured that the children of our community will arrive at their schools and classrooms with all the supplies that are required to give them a head start into a productive school year,” said Joanne Robinson, director of operations at HOPE Outreach Center. “They were excited to get started with new pencils, paper, uniforms, books, and brand-new backpacks.”

HOPE Outreach Center, Inc. is a not-for-profit 501c (3) organization founded in 1995. The Davie, Florida, based center offers an immediate ‘hand up’ to people in the Broward County community who find themselves unable to make ends meet due to: job loss, disability, health crisis, and/or some other emergency circumstance. By providing emergent financial support, food and other educational and social services, HOPE Outreach Center often serves as the financial and emotional bridge that allows families in crisis to return to self-reliance and independence quickly and comfortably.
