[Bridgeview, IL] Northwestern College understands that today’s college student has more to juggle than just homework, tests, quizzes and papers. The majority of its students also have children to care for, households to run, and bills to pay. In order to assist them with those responsibilities, thereby enhancing their ability to complete their programs and graduate, Northwestern College hosted its first mini-career fair for its students seeking part-time employment opportunities.

On Thursday, August 21, the student lounge at the College’s Bridgeview Campus was bustling with activity for nearly two hours as students conversed with potential employers, the majority in connection with the healthcare industry. Over 80% of Northwestern College students are enrolled in either the Nursing or Medical Assisting Programs.

It is believed that the opportunity to obtain employment within a student’s industry of choice not only assists students with college and living expenses, but also provides them with experience in the career setting they are studying. This will significantly assist them after they obtain their degrees and begin seeking full-time positions in this same or similar environment.

Northwestern Medicine attended the College’s mini-career fair seeking to hire students for part-time positions as Registered Medical Assistants, Patient Care Techs, & others. Home Watch Care Givers and Health Advocates interviewed students for positions as Caregivers and Certified Nursing Assistants. BrightStar of Tinley Park/Oak Lawn attended in order to recruit Registered Nurses (RN), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN), Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA), and Certified Home Health Aids (CHHA).

The two non-healthcare related companies that participated in this week’s mini-career fair interviewed for positions that yielded wages ranging from $14 to $30 per hour. Richlee Vans, Inc. interviewed students in connection with open positions for Bus Drivers and Para Professionals (bus monitors). UPS, which also offers tuition reimbursement for part-time employees, recruited for package handlers and full-time Sleep Team Drivers.

Most of the employers that participated in the event reported that they had received at least 5-8 applications and would be following up with additional interviews.

Northwestern College’s mini-career fair was sponsored by the College’s Career Services Department and was limited to Northwestern College students.
