DENVER (June 10, 2019) – Students from Pima Medical Institute’s Denver campus walked away from the inaugural “Scrub Bowl” as champions. The competition was held during the annual conference of the Association of Surgical Technologists (AST) in Washington DC and featured teams from schools across the country. The Surgical Technology students from Pima Medical Institute beat out formidable opponents and finished the competition with a score that more than doubled that of the second place team.

Students Amanda Newcombe, Christine Grau, and James Kelley celebrate their win with Program Director Mark Wilms and Clinical Director Tracy Church.

“We couldn’t be prouder of these students and their instructors who prepared them for the competition,” said Ryan Minic, Pima Medical Institute Denver Campus Director. “The Surgical Technology program teaches our students about instrumentation and medication used during a procedure, and prepares them for real-life experiences in the operating room. Competitions like the Scrub Bowl assist in building their capacity to remain calm under pressure and hone their ability to keep a keen attention to detail.”

Surgical technologists work side-by-side with doctors and nurses in the operating room, making sure each procedure goes as smoothly and precisely as possible. They are a critical part of the operating team and according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics; the employment of surgical technologists is projected to grow 12 percent by 2026.

Also known as operating room technicians, surgical technologists assist with operations. They prepare rooms, arrange equipment and help doctors during surgeries, usually in hospitals, but sometimes in outpatient surgical centers.

In addition to Denver, Pima Medical Institute offers a Surgical Technology associate degree program at its Phoenix, Arizona and Chula Vista, California campuses. Through hands-on learning, students can earn their degree in 18 months while learning from highly experienced faculty in a real-world laboratory. Add to that field experience through clinical externships and students will be prepared to start their careers immediately.
