A top executive who led the expansion of Laureate Education Inc. in Latin America will leave the company next month.

Ricardo Berckemeyer, president and chief operating officer has decided to leave Baltimore-based Laureate to “pursue other interests,” the company said in a federal filing Monday. Berckemeyer, who has worked at Laureate for the last 17 years, will step down on July 15.

Laureate, a for-profit network of colleges and universities, will not fill Berckemeyer’s position. The company reviewed its organizational structure after learning of Berckemeyer’s decision and has chosen to eliminate the chief operating officer position. The responsibilities will be assigned to other executives.

CEO Eilif Serck-Hanssen said in a statement Berckemeyer has been “an invaluable partner in simplifying and strengthening Laureate.”

Berckemeyer was CEO of Laureate’s Latin America business until 2017, when he was elevated to chief operating officer. He added the president title as a part of a succession plan implemented by Laureate following founder Doug Becker’s exit from the company in 2018.
