Stratford University will close its campuses in Virginia Beach, Newport News and Glen Allen by the end of the month, according to a school official who said the locations weren’t financially viable.

The for-profit university, which first opened in Fairfax in 1976, has three other campuses in northern Virginia, one in Baltimore and one in New Delhi, India, that will all remain open.

David Brand, vice president of academic affairs, said growth at the three campuses that will close was significantly slower than at the other campuses, 3% versus 12% overall, potentially putting the entire system at risk if they didn’t shutter.

“We couldn’t grow fast enough,” he said.

About 555 students enrolled at the three campuses will be affected. Brand said up to 35 staff members work at each. Some employees will transfer to other locations.
