Stratford University, the for-profit college that told students last week that it would be closing its campuses in Virginia Beach, Newport News and Glen Allen, has changed its mind, slightly.

Last week, the college told students it would close the campuses by the end of this term, May 24, with the exception of its Virginia Beach and Glen Allen campuses which would remain open into the fall only for in-person lab work for its culinary and health students. Options for approximately 550 affected students were to take online classes, attend one of Stratford’s remaining campuses — three in Northern Virginia, one in Baltimore and one in New Delhi, India — or transfer to another university.

On Friday, though, the university’s vice president of academic affairs, David Brand, said all three campuses would remain open for live instruction to any students needing it until they finish their programs. The campuses won’t be enrolling any new students.

“Most have transferred to online, but we want to take care of every student and do this right,” Brand wrote in an email. He said more than 75% of the students had opted to take online-only courses.
