Lawmakers consider state regulations as feds roll back rules
Theresa Sweet described to lawmakers the impact her student loan debt is taking on her.
“I can’t finance a car, much less a home, and it is unlikely that I will ever be able to start a family or get married because I would condemn them to a lifetime of poverty,” Sweet told lawmakers.
She said between student loans and private financing, she is $500,000 in debt for a bachelor of arts degree in photography from the now-defunct Brooks Institute.
Sweet was one of several students who testified that trade schools and for-profit colleges are using high-pressure sales tactics to sign students up for classes and student loans, misleading students about job placement and salaries.
