The Art Institute of Pittsburgh has closed, the federal receiver running the Strip District school has informed the school’s 2,100 students.

News of the closure comes after the collapse of a last-ditch effort to sell the historic Pittsburgh arts school, founded in 1921, according to an email to students from Mark Dottore, a Cleveland-based receiver who took over several Art Institute campuses and Argosy University in January.

The campus closed at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.

“We have been working day and night to secure a path forward for campuses in receivership,” Mr. Dottore wrote. “With my apologies, the acquisition of your campus fell through.”

The notice came after Mr. Dottore told a federal judge earlier in the day he was close to a deal that would allow students there to take courses managed by the Eastern Gateway Community College in Steubenville, Ohio.
