CSPENTHIS JUST OUT:

Politico is reporting that David Cleary, the Chief of Staff to Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee Chairman Lamar Alexander (R-TN) told the Education Writers Association that the reauthorization of the Higher Education Act could be complete by the end of the year. “Our goal is to have a law before Christmas,” he told the gathering of education journalists. During his remarks, Mr. Cleary said it was a “top priority” for Chairman Alexander, who is retiring after this Congress, to finish a reauthorization of the Higher Education Act this year. “Eleven months is a lot of time to get through committee, get to the floor, go to conference with the House,” Mr. Cleary said. Last year, negotiations over a higher education bill between Chairman Alexander and Ranking Member Patty Murray (D-WA) Patty Murray, broke down over unrelated K-12 issues But Mr. Cleary said that divided government could spur more willingness to compromise this year. “We’ve had some good conversations with Sen. Murray,” he said. “We had a good conversation with Congressman [Bobby] Scott, the new chairman of the House education committee. There seems to be a lot of interest in beginning these conversations and getting to work.”

2019 CSPEN Higher Education Policy Meeting

For the past five years CSPEN has repeatedly listened to the requests and recommendations of you – of our community – and attempted to do our best to incorporate your guidance into actionable items in support of our collective mission, goals, and objectives.

Over the past couple of years, during our Annual Conferences in the Fall, attendees repeatedly requested that we consider developing a meeting in Washington, DC – challenging us to bring together various representatives from Capitol Hill, the Department of Education, the Media (Print and Social), and DC Think Tanks – so that we could both hear and respond to their perspectives regarding our industry and once again attempt to offer factual information about the critical, professional role we play in helping educate our nation’s workforce.
