People in Denton know about Texas Woman’s University and the University of North Texas, but they have probably never heard of the University of Denton, where it costs only $999 to obtain associate, bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees all at once.

Call the University of Denton — 323-284-4155 — and the phone just rings and rings and rings, making it nearly impossible to schedule an official visit to the university, whose campus appears to be the TA Travel Center in the 6400 block of North Interstate 35 in Denton.

There is no indication the TA Travel Center is in any way involved with the fake university’s operations; the travel center’s address was merely listed as the university’s location.

In December, a Jenks, Oklahoma, police officer was arrested for allegedly using a fake master’s degree to earn himself an education salary increase from the city of Jenks. Tulsa County prosecutors said the officer, 60-year-old James Bennett, purchased the master’s degree from the University of Denton, which authorities said in a probable cause affidavit is a diploma mill.
