Tulsa, Oklahoma, January 16th, 2019 – Community Care College is partnering with Oklahoma Blood Institute for an on-campus blood drive. All donated blood collected will be dedicated to the ongoing care of Connor Hopper, a 12-year-old boy from Claremore diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. The blood drive will be held at Community Care College on Wednesday, January 16th from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm.

Community Care College blood drive“We have an opportunity to help save the life of Connor, the son of an Oklahoma Technical College graduate. Connor was a healthy 12-year-old kid until he was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia last October. His treatment consists of aggressive chemotherapy drugs that ravage his body. After every treatment, he has required several blood transfusions to help stabilize him,” said Julie Benson, Medical Assistant Department Head and Instructor at Community Care College.

Connor was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia on October 15, 2018. Connor likes to stay active through Boy Scouts, football, and playing the trumpet in band. Connor’s parents say that he shows strength, determination, and courage with each chemotherapy treatment and blood transfusion.

The Community Care College Medical Assistants host a blood drive four times a year. This allows students to observe the skill of the phlebotomist while supporting the Oklahoma Blood Institute. Medical Assistant students at Community Care College are trained in the areas of phlebotomy, ECG’s, bacterial culture growth and evaluation, pulmonary function tests, autoclave usage, assisting in Minor Surgical procedures, capillary blood collections, CLIA-waived lab tests, and more.
