This year’s National Sputum Bowl Challenge will see five teams from Pima Medical Institute competing. Respiratory therapy students from the Albuquerque, Denver, Las Vegas and Tucson campuses will compete in the National Sputum Bowl Challenge December 4 – 7 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Part of the American Association for Respiratory Care’s (AARC) annual conference, the competition is a Jeopardy-style quiz game where students must quickly and accurately answer questions that range from anatomy and physiology to mechanical breathing and disease.
Each of these teams advanced through the state competition and will be up against some tough competition from other teams representing their respective states.
“We are proud of the teams that advanced through state competitions to make it to nationals,” said Fred Freedman, Pima Medical Institute President and CEO. “Having five teams competing under the Pima Medical flag speaks to the effectiveness of our respiratory therapy faculty, training in a real-world environment and their commitment to our students’ success.”
Pima Medical is no stranger to the national championships, with wins in 2015, 2014, 2013, 2008, 2006 and 2005. This year’s teams are looking to bring the national title back to Pima Medical Institute.
The AARC yearly conference features the latest in respiratory therapy technology, breakthroughs in treatment and education. Practitioners, students and instructors from across the country attend.
