HOUSTON, Texas – The Houston campus of MIAT College of Technology is supporting the “Movember” annual event that involves growing a moustache during the month of November to raise awareness of prostate cancer and other men’s health issues: MIAT has produced T-shirts with the slogan “Grow a Mo, Help a Bro” that are available for purchase by faculty, staff, students, and members of the public. MIAT has designated the Blue Cure Foundation as its charity beneficiary of funds raised through the sale of these T-shirts.

In addition to producing and selling these T-shirts for a great cause, MIAT is hosting a moustache-growing competition for its students, faculty, and staff.

“MIAT is a socially responsible career college that actively supports causes close to our campuses in the metro Detroit and metro Houston areas. Our faculty and staff are committed to fostering and maintaining a caring and fun atmosphere at our campuses, which creates an environment that is highly conducive for learning new skills and building camaraderie,” commented John Willis, MIAT College of Technology president of the Houston campus. “Our goal this Movember is to raise $3,000 or more for Blue Cure.”

Blue Cure is a non-profit organization that focuses on education and advocacy as preventative tools against prostate cancer. Blue Cure was formed by Houston businessman Gabe Canales, who upon his own diagnosis at the age of 35, was surprised to learn that a large percentage of prostate cancer diagnoses can be avoided with the right lifestyle choices. The Blue Cure Foundation is a force for empowering all men, including younger ones, with tools for preventing prostate cancer. One of the ways it does this is through providing resources and information for anti-cancer diets, exercise programs, and other preventative health measures. The Foundation also offers support for those with cancer diagnoses, and funds research into integrative as well as preventative cancer medicine. (Source: www.bluecure.org)

After Hurricane Harvey ravaged the Houston area and other Gulf Coast communities last year, MIAT produced and sold “Houston Strong” T-shirts. MIAT raised almost $3,000 and contributed the proceeds from its “Houston Strong” T-shirt sales to Baker Ripley, an organization that is dedicated to strengthening the cultural and economic foundations of Houston-area neighborhoods and communities. See www.bakerripley.org for more information.

Details about the “Grow a Mo, Help a Bro” T-Shirts

The “Grow a Mo, Help a Bro” T-shirts are available for men and women in sizes small to 3XL. All shirts are black with red lettering. The T-shirts are available now to purchase for $20 each with cash, a credit card or debit card. The T-shirts can be picked up at the MIAT Houston campus located at 533 Northpark Central Dr, Houston, TX 77073. Those who would like to purchase a T-shirt but cannot make it to the campus are invited to call the MIAT Bookkeeping Department at 832-234-5700 and purchase one over the phone. The shirts can be shipped to any location in the United States. Standard shipping rates will apply.

“Movember” was started in Australia in 2003 by the Movember Foundation and has grown into a worldwide, once-a-year movement to persuade men to grow facial hair and start a conversation about men’s health issues. Blue Cure has joined this effort and also encourages those who participate to “go beyond the beard,” advocating for in-depth lifestyle changes with No Crud November, a daily challenge that encourages men toward a plant-based, cancer-prevention diet.
