The for-profit school is at risk of getting its accreditation suspended. It is claiming its landlord is trying to put it out of business to help a rival for-profit school.

The Fortis Institute in Erie is not only fighting to keep its accreditation and stay in business. The for-profit trade and career school is also battling to remain at its campus in Fairview Township.

For the past 13 months, Fortis has been pursuing a lawsuit in Erie County Court against its landlord.

Fortis is seeking to end what it claims is the landlord’s illegal attempts to terminate the leases for the complex of five buildings where Fortis operates at 5757 West Ridge Road, just west of the Millcreek Township line.

The leases for four of the buildings expire in August 2019, and the lease for the fifth expires in October 2020. Fortis is contending that its landlord is trying to force it from the premises early to benefit a competing for-profit school that is affiliated with the landlord.
