Bellus Academy was awarded the Gold Excellence in Community Service award in 2017. Community service is an integral component of the Bellus Academy culture at all of its California campuses including Poway, El Cajon and National City.

Throughout 2017, Bellus Academy students and staff participated in 81 unique community service initiatives, reaching over 100,000 individuals in the San Diego County Area. Community service initiatives ranged from free haircuts for individuals experiencing homelessness to self-care workshops for at-risk teens.

CAPPS developed the Excellence in Community Service Award to recognize and encourage initiatives in community service, service learning, and civic engagement that have a significant impact on communities. “Humanitarianism is a core value at Bellus Academy and our students participate in multiple opportunities throughout the year that allow them to give back to others,” said Lynch.

Bellus Academy highlighted the humanitarian side of beauty careers in a video submitted with the award application. In the video, Bellus Academy student Jessica Cunningham shared how attending a fundraising event that provided haircuts to victims of human trafficking inspired her to enter beauty school and pay her gifts forward. “Giving back by supporting community causes throughout the year helps students see how beauty and wellness professionals improve an individual’s external appearance, while also helping to restore their confidence and dignity,” said Lynch.
