The Student Nurse Association of the Violet L Schumacher School of Nursing will present a Community Health Day on Nov 13. Pictured here are SNA members [L to R} Mya Robinson, Vice President; Nicole Keating, President; and Felicia Robinson, Event Coordinator, who participated in a previous community event at Reavis HS.
Inspiration for this Community Health Day came about while student nurse Felicia Robinson was researching healthy eating options for a persuasive paper and came across the documentary What the Health. Inspired by the film, Robinson raised the subject matter with the Student Nurse Association. Shortly thereafter a decision was made to build a community health event around a showing of the film, adding the free blood pressure screenings as a public service.

What the Health is an investigatory documentary by filmmaker Kip Andersen that is not only eye opening but also spiced with humor. The film features Anderson’s interviews with medical doctors, researchers, and consumer advocates, which begins to uncover the secret to preventing and even reversing chronic diseases. With heart disease and cancer being the leading causes of death in this country and diabetes reaching an all-time high, Anderson’s multiple interviews reveal a health cover-up by some of the nation’s leading health organizations, exposing what they do not want the public to know. The movie is promoted as exposing the collusion and corruption in government and big business that is costing trillions of healthcare dollars and keeping people sick. What the Health is the groundbreaking follow-up film from the creators of the award-winning documentary Cowspiracy.

The Violet L Schumacher School of Nursing’s Student Nurse Association is excited to provide this Community Health Day to the public. In addition, they are pleased to offer free blood pressure screenings that evening, sharing with the public what they have learned in the classroom. The student nurses are hopeful that many local residents will come out to take advantage of this opportunity right here in the Bridgeview community.
