Federal education officials had found recently shuttered Westech College seriously non-compliant with Title IV requirements, leading to its transfer to a heightened cash monitoring program, a U.S. Department of Education (DOE) spokesman said Wednesday.

In December, DOE officials conducted a program review at the for-profit trade school and identified that Westech also had failed to pay refunds and complaints indicated lacking financial and administrative capability.

DOE officials must ensure the ongoing review is thorough and covers all factors, the spokesman said, so that Title IV funds are fully protected. The department couldn’t comment any further since the review remains active.

In a Dec. 16 letter to Westech College President Barry Maleki, the college was informed by the San Francisco/Seattle School Participation Division, a regional group under the DOE that assists schools with eligibility and certification processes, that it had been transferred from the Advanced Method of Payment to the Heightened Cash Monitoring 2 (HCM2) method effective two days prior.
