The Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) has invested considerable resources toward energizing the Department’s efforts to ensure that public and private schools, including institutions of higher education (IHEs), are committed to and effectively executing their obligations under Title IX, a federal civil rights law that prohibits discrimination based on sex in federally funded educational programs and activities. The Department’s focus has been on Title IX as a tool for requiring IHEs to effectively respond to and work to prevent incidents of sexual misconduct and gender (or gender identity) based violence and harassment, an effort strengthened considerably by the enactment of the Campus SaVe Act of 2013 (Section 304 of the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2013). This webinar will track closely the Department’s April 2014 “Questions and Answers on Title IX and Sexual Violence” and April 4, 2011 Dear Colleague Letter to review the law and basic guidance.
